So we're almost done with middle school XC for the year. I have a policy that kids that walk during runs have to do 200 push ups before the next race. I don't institute the rule until well into the season when I can tell everyone can actually run without needing to stop. At this point I've got about 25 kids. The slowest girl runs 16:00 for 2 miles and the slowest boy runs right at that too. Not fast, but not too bad for the slowest kids.
On Tuesday I had a kid who can run 15 minutes for 2 miles walk. We practice at the same location as the high schoolers. I had two different high schoolers several minutes apart come up to me and ask why one of my kids was walking. I also had most of my team back them up and say he was walking. The kid was absent Wednesday (which is normal - he has a school function on Wednesdays). I tell him yesterday that I know he walked and that he owes me the pushups. Heck, I even let him off easy by counting the push ups we did as a team after our run towards his total. He owes me 70 push ups (although we did nowhere near 130 as a team). I emailed his mom but haven't gotten a response yet.
I'm not letting him run Saturday until he does the 70 push ups. Am I crazy? I had 3 boys get caught earlier this year walking and they did their 200 without complaint.
