Does anyone have the opportunity to run on Yale's "tuned" indoor track in the early 80's. It was awesome!
I remember running in the Metropoitan Championships in 1983. I hadn't run all week due to tendinitis in my knee. I was out til 2:30 in the morning before the meet sledding with some RU Cheerleaders (fat ones. What was I thinking?)
Stepped on the track that day, the gun went off and I seemingly sprinted the entire way. 4:19 at the mile and finished in 8:16. And I didn't even score. I was freaking 7th!!! Seton Hall and FDU had a couple of Kenyans in the low 8:00's as were a couple of Iona kids (Kiernan Stack, Pat McCarthy). Mike Regan for St. John's may have been in there too.
The next year, it was the same deal. 8:17 (missed the IC4A's by .1, damn that FAT!) and finished 6th.
Rumor is that got rid of the track because it was unfair.
Other than those two races, I don't think I ever broke 8:30. Running anywhere else was like running uphill.
