Noticed Desiree Davila was in the results of the Lisbon race won by Mary Keitany.

Helena Kiprop ran a PB of 1:08:57 (previous best 1:10:10) and the men's winner was within a minute of his best time, so perhaps not 2 minutes slow - or at least not for some.
Interesting splits for Kiprop in that Berlin race, 1:09:37 and 1:15:24... but yes, not such a big PB as I thought in that case.

This is the 'natural' way to look at it but it likely has a not-so-apparent' bias. By selecting the winners from a set you are likely getting those that have performed particularly well. Now, if the winner going in was the one that is strongly favored, such as on the the woman's side, then it is not as much affected. When you look at the winner from among a number of similar athletes you are more likely to have an 'unusual draw' for your comparison. There is also a bias the other way in that you are comparing one race with the PB. The two influences need to be considered when drawing conclusions.
Davila: 3.5 min slower than Keitany. Double that and add to Keitanys 2:19 and you got 2:26, which is pretty much en par with her aided 2:22 from Boston.
Rothlin: he is going to run NYC so while this may not be an awesome performance it's "ok" ... right where he should be at this point.
Her 2:22 was legit, against two other 2:22 women. This is a one-off during a training buildup for another marathon after summer track, while Keitany is competing in full form in her best event. When Keitany ran 2:28 at NYCM, no one who knew better thought that was her potential, any more than this 1:11 represents Davila's long-term fitness.

Keitany is closer to peak shape for NYC, Davila is in a base stage of training for trials. Not really much of a comparison there but nice try.
The conditions in Lisbon were not nearly as favorable as the conditions in Boston. Lisbon probably made her a minute slower, while Boston made her 3+ minutes faster.
I guess the 2:22 she ran will always be a PR for her, but it was so "aided". After a decent summer of track PR's, she has come around, but she'll be hard pressed to run under 2:26 again, let along the aided time from Boston.

Kawauchi didn't run Lisbon.
She is in a training buildup and not in racing form. She WILL be a force to be reckoned with at the 2012 Olympic Trials. For the best interview she did this year (rather lengthy as it is career retrospective) go to http://www.garycohenrunning.com/Interviews/Davila.aspx It was done after the US Championships & includes plenty in the beginning about her PR racing there and lots about Boston. The tone I see in the interview is one of calm and complete confidence in her training, racing and future improvements that will just happen as a matter of fact as she continues to get better for a few more years.
Agreed. She is quite a capable runner.
I'm not famililiar with 12.5 km. Porugal Half doesn't have 5k 10k 15k 20k splits.
Isn't Desiree Davila overated. This shows Caroline Kilel is faster twice.
Her 1:11 half proves just how 'aided' that 2:22 really was. She's a 2:26 marathoner at best who just happened
to hit a good day, a downhill course, a tailwind....
Kind of like Hall's 2:04. Sure it's a 2:04 - with an asterisk. Hell, I've run a 4:00 mile. Downhill.
She doesn't have any better a chance at the trials than anyone else.
