I've heard this several times about records. I mean 21 seconds in a marathon, is that really smashing? This word is thrown around, even about someone breaking an ultra record by 30 minutes. So what is the definition, what qualifies as a smashing?

Good question, and one for which, I dare say, there is no answer.
I recall a few years back a Dem won a Senate seat and CNN called it a blow out; a Republican Senator won a seat in another state by a larger margin and barely mentioned...
I propose that for a record to be smashed, it needs to exceed the previous record by >1 sec per mile for a distance race or improve it 1%.
I know it when I see it.
