Maybe some of you sport kinesiology/sport physiology people can help me out.
I've always been told that I'm a fast-twitch athlete. I had a decent 40 time of 4.8 and in college I was able to hit my kickoffs well into the endzone - which was 65+ yards before the kickoff rule changed. A few years removed from punting and placekicking, I took up running for the first time as my only form of exercise and worked my way down to a 17:30 5K (which isn't great, but good for a year and a half of training and shows that I have some endurance).
One of the workouts I started doing in the very beginning of my training was 14x200 with 200m jogging rests. Despite being fast twitch, I've never been able to cover 200m faster than 29 seconds - a time which is deemed slow by most standards.
Why is this? Am I actually a slow twitch runner who got by on kicking technique alone in order to maximize my distance? Do I have pure leg strength as opposed to leg speed?
Thoughts?
