With Bairu just announcing he is too bagged to run the Toronto Waterfront in 3 weeks...it leaves the door open for Reid Coolsaet, Eric Gillis, Dylan Wykes and Rob Watson to make the Olympic Team....hope Bairu makes it back to run the 10k. Seems like he isn't quite cut out for the marathon training.

Shalanes bronze at World Cross started the year with such promise for Schumachers group, the rest of it has been really tough.
Bairu hasn't abandoned plans to try for an Olympic qualifier though--a good performance at Fukuoka could still see him placed on the '12 Olympic team, right?
It sounds like they are training too hard, the opposite of easy....Bairu is no wuss--so i can only imagine they ramped up the build-up too fast and he couldn't recover. Maybe he should read Ryan Hall's posts on how to recover properly.
Correct. Bairu does have any time before the spring to get one in...but it sounds like he is re-tooling. Also, if his time only matched the time of the others who went head-to-head, I am not sure if he would necessarily get picked before the others (who now have a solid track record of performance over the distance). Then again, if he bombed a 2:08-2:09 the decision would be easy.
Well if you are gonna overtrain, overtrain in St. Moritz.
The myth persists that overtraining is somehow still good basework -- even if you end up having trouble walking because of it.
Kind of a waste if he breaks Drayton's record in Fukuoka, though, what with the $36,000 bonus for a new Canadian record at Toronto.
Did you read his comments following New York performance last year? HE WILL NEVER BE A MARATHONER. He has a track guys mentality.
Learn how to run tired. Do not freshen up. Learn to deal with it. This is why guys like Kennedy failed in the marathon.
I don't know, stellar, it's hard to establish a trend off only one data point.
Agree, i think Bairu can do it...the question is when. The time is getting late....

I'll go with the outsider, and say that Eric Gillis will break the record ahead of Coolsaet. I watched them both run a track race this summer and was struck by how much of a "marathon stride" Gillis has. This could be his breakthrough race.
Is it me, or is Bairu consistently out with issues? Perhaps he simply chooses to race spairingly, but I feel like he is often out for one reason or another.
Injured in 2007, 2008, has raced sparingly in 2010 (although extremely well when he did, outside of NYC), and now seemingly burnt out in 2011 (after a few poor performances).
I hope he does do well, as he's a huge talent and it'd be great to see a Canadian do well internationally, but I wonder if we'll ever see him hit his true potential.
Reminds us just how good Jerome was, eh? I can see Gillis breaking it ahead of Reid too, though, although I'm a fan of both. I think Bairu is awesome and I wish him the best but I think maybe he's running the marathon for the wrong reasons and I'm inclined to agree with some of the posters above that he really is a track guy who's moved up too soon maybe.

Reid's been beating Eric over every race. There's no way he can take the lead!

That guy who posted after his 10k Canadian record that Bairu was not cut out for the marathon based on his epic energy depletion at the end of that 10k had it right on, unfortunately. Let's hope that Bairu can figure it out and soon, or else he would have to move back to the 10,000m for London 2012.
Except that the other discipline -- XC (especially long XC races) -- where you have to push through fatigue is where he has typically excelled (as in, has done better there than on the track).

That is not the same type of energy depletion that you experience at the end of a marathon. Fading in a 10k because you can't sustain the pace is not the same as running out of glycogen.
Now Bairu's not listed for Fukuoka... so where does he go from here? London? The track?
