Gonna bank on "No."
Unless: Cheserek
Even still, my money's on no.
Not too many preps focusing on the 10,000. Rupp ran a 13:37 5000 as an 18-yr old after graduating (though I believe it would still count as the high school record), which converts to faster than 28:32, even though he never approached that time, having run one 10,000 that same season in Europe.
Nunca!
If Cheserek focused on the 10000m HSR he could come close but I don't see any reason for him to focus on the 10000m. Eventually! In the next 5-7 years more Kenyan High School athletes will come to the United States and I feel one athlete who will have the ability to break the High School 3000m, 5000m, and 10000m could emerge.
Doubtful. Chapa took that race out at an absolutely brutal pace - 4:10 for the first mile and dropped everyone.
The main reason the 10K HSR has lasted so long and I don't see it coming down any time soon is because it is a strong record. It is a minute faster than Parker Stinson's best time and he's one of the best HS long distance runners to come along in a while. We glorify the sub-4 mile, but in the NCAA for example there are about a dozen guys you run the equivalent of a sub-4 mile, but only 2-3 guys run a faster 10K than Chapa did in HS decades ago.
There are several other reason why it is 'probably' going to last for a while:
1. The top HS kids don't train to run a fast 10K, most don't even train to run a fast 5K.
2. A HS kids would need to get into a race in June against open or college athletes; the HS state meets and post season schedule would make that very difficult.
3. The 10K is not a glory event, in U.S. HSs, it is about the mile and 2-mile; Ritz, Rupp and LV probably could come close when they were at their peak, but I am not sure they could have broken it, while focusing on running a fast mile/2-mile.
If Cheserek chooses to go after it, he would have a very good chance, but even he would have to train for it and that would be at the expense of his middle distance times. It is very difficult to train to run a fast 10k and a fast mile at the same time. Every year, I become more impressed with what Chapa did; everyone knows that Webb’s mile record is way out there, but the 10K HSR sort of reminds me of the girls 800m HSR, where to a lot of people, it simply does not get the respect it deserves.
Don't remember him even leading the Drake Relays 10k that year or going out that hard. I thought he pretty much stuck to an even pacing throughout. I used to have some pictures and had his splits. I thought he pretty much stuck to 67-70's.
Does anyone know what the high school 10K record was before Chapa broke it?

Can you get those pictures?
They would be great to see.
I think Eric Hulst also broke 29 (28:50s), maybe he had it.
It'll have to be a LV type guy. An aerobic monster with the strength and balls of a solo sub 4 miler.
Hulst held the record briefly.

Is this a joke?

Actually he did not go out in 4:10 and that has nothing to do with whether someone can break the record. If anything the opposite! 28:32 is not a strong HS record in comparison to LV's 2 mile or Rupps 5k. If either had focused on the 10k at their peak, they would have had it.

It's actually roughly equivalent to Rupp's 13:37, according to the IAAF tables. LV's deuce is slightly better (about 10 seconds worth over 10k).
Agreed that the 4:10 first mile would mean nothing if it were even true.
Yes, someone will break it.
yeah closer to 4:34 as I recall... tucked in just following
Yes. Another "16"-year-old Kenyan will get adopted by US parents in a couple years and go sub 28. I'd be surprised if this doesn't happen.

-Long Distance-
Parker Stinson - For 2 years he was the top H.S. 10K performer and 2xs national Jr champ.
