what does it mean when I can kill my long runs and feel great but whenever we race or do speedwork people that suffer on the long runs are ahead me. I put in decent mileage over the summer fyi.

races ARE fast
I mean't my times haven't been good even though i seem to be in better shape on long runs than the other guys
Maybe you need more muscular work. Strides, shorts hills. Sounds like you aren't efficient at faster paces... yet. Luckily this is the easiest to attain.
It means they're faster than you.
It is barely mid-September. Give the faster intervals some time to take hold. You'll be crushing it by mid-October.
It probably means that the folks who beat you in races are more talented than you are.
It is a myth that refuses to die that anyone can be good/great with a lot of hard work. A HUGE determinant of the outcome (race results) is simply the underlying talent of the runner.
If that bums you out, it shouldn't. Do what you can to be the best you can be. Virtually everyone runs into more talented runners than themselves eventually. If that stops you from enjoying the ride then you need to have a heart to heart with yourself.
Stop "killing" your long runs.
