And how many times have people said "Oh, why do you worry so about the back of pack runners!Theyre not bothering anyone." Classic.

Boulet has turned into a rode whore, not only does he find easy races to win now a days he takes all the fliers out of his running store that have any prize money so no one else knows. I even heard he ran a rave in Oakland to Save the Indians or someting where he ran 36-37 minutes for 10k on got $500 bucks. However, he's now just a pacer for his future wife...Congrats Dick!

Did the marathon fix the course later or did most everyone run a short marathon course?

classic SF Marathon story....this has happened before at SF...I hope Magda gets the prize money...this is the fault of race management...it is not unusual for TNT runners to begin prior to the official start

I hear that they are going to adjust times according to a runner's overall pace for the 25.5 miles that they ran, add on the difference and make those the "official" results...I wonder what the USATF will make of that? or the Boston marathon for that matter (for those submitting BQ times).The Chronicle said that they would give checks to both Magda and the woman who finished 2nd and ran the whole course....a $1,000 mistake!Only 2-300 runners failed to make the turn...eventually somone who had looked at the course map before hand came a long and took the pied piper out of the picture.

I was the last person to make the correct turn (4th place at the time). My girlfriend took a picture of me at the turn. You can see in the picture that the turn is marked as clear as day. There are orange cones going all the way across the road, and about 6 large bold white arrows painted on the ground marking the turn. Looking at the picture, I see no way anyone who is paying an once of attention could miss it. Nate Bowen didn't miss it. I didn't miss it.

Initially I thought the missed turn was the race organizers fault. But after looking at the picture, I don't blame the organizers one bit. The turn was marked very well.

Rumor has it that the lead cyclist for the women was with Magdelena Lewy and Magdelena was just following the cyclist (who missed the turn). Everyone else blew it.

Jason's Observations:

(1) Did Martin Franklin make a quick pit-stop on Polk Street or Castro Street? Most likely.

(2) The SanFrancisco Marathon could be the west-coast version of the NYC Marathon, possibly be even bigger than NYC if it were developed properly. You have all the ingredients: Cool morning weather, moist, cool air, the most beautiful bridge in the world, and a potentially challenging course in the most beautiful city in the USA.

It is AMAZING to me that the potential of the SF Marathon has not captured the imagination of the Top Execs of all the big banking, technology and manfacturing. companies in the SF Area.

I ran this race back in 1990, when they started at the north end of the GG Bridge. It remains by far the most beautiful marathon that I have ever run and probably ever will run. The first mile over the bridge, with the fog and the fog horns blaring, was nothing short of surreal.

You are probably correct about the lead bike. This is similar to the SF marathon in 1993? The race was under different management back then...the chas pack of 4-5 guys was lead off the course in GGP, at about the 14 mile mark.

I give credit to this years race for paying the extra 1k. This is a great decision, and tells me that someone is making some quality decisions...maybe the race will get back on track.

I looked over the SF half course, which started at the Zoo, went up through the park, down Haight street, and along 3rd street...this is a solid course, and could be fairly quick.

I would love to see the half marathon grow, in quality and prize money. A good solid mid summer half could be larger than the marathon.
