Yes, 1st day heats and last day finals.
Yes, 1st day heats and last day finals.
Why? So they can let more people in?
Hell no.
No because Universal would show us women's long jump for 1.5hrs during the men's three races.
It'd make it that much harder to double 10/5k.
Not worth losing that for more competitors.

What a stupid idea.
No. Definitely not.
they should just make the standard a bit easier. only 8 non USA/ETH/KEN athletes hit it!

That's why Yifter and Viren were so awesome.
The used to have heats 30yrs ago. And 3 rounds for the 5k.

Really? Lasse Viren ran 2 rounds in the 10k and 2 rounds in the 5k.
Heat three of the 1976 5k was still one of the toughest qualifying rounds to get through after 35 years of WC and Olympics.
Heat 3 1976 Olypics
1 Brendan Foster 28 Great Britain GBR 13:20.34 QU/OR
2 Rod Dixon 26 New Zealand NZL 13:20.48 QU
3 Knut Kvalheim 26 Norway NOR 13:20.60 QU
4 Enn Sellik 21 Soviet Union URS 13:20.81 QU
5 Detlef Uhlemann 26 West Germany FRG 13:21.08 QC
6 Aniceto Simões 30 Portugal POR 13:21.93 QC
They had heats in Geb's day and he wouldn't come back and double.
The finals only system has allowed Bekele to chase doubles and he succeeded nicely in 2008 and 2009.
The idea of prelims is to soften the standards and allow more people to compete. And to allow people to race head to head to determine the finals.
There doesn't seem to be an issue with worthy people not being in the final so I wouldn't want them to go back to having heats.
Viren also finished 5th in the '76 marathon....so 2 rounds of the 5k, a gold medal....2 rounds of the 10k, a gold medal....and then 5th in the marathon 18 hours after the 5k final in his first attempt at the distance.

If I remeber correctly they had heats in the 1995 WC.
The last Championships/Olympics I remember having 10k Heats were the Sydney Games.
I only remember, because Michael Aish was tearing up the RMAC then headed to Sydeny for the Olympics, and in the post race review, I read the line, "New Zealand's Michael Aish was the first to fall from the pace."
That line put my running into perspective.
Yes, that way Scott Bauhs can't say he ran in a 10k final.
