Symmonds already qualified, 1st in his heat in 1:46. Kaki just ran a 1:43 high effort, eased off in the the last 50.

Jock did not look good, probably will not advance.
Looks like Jock is gonzo
tough race for Jock, but we should have expected that after the long season he's had. a great experience for him to be here, and i bet he'll be back for london next year.
Hay guys, just logged on at the race director's comp. Pwned Jock there!! Now you can stop comparing him to me. LOL!
Dear DavidRudisha,
Don't blow it!!!!
Love, Kenny
Borza looked strong.
Khadevis advances, only had to run 1:47 or so.
jock s reaction time was like a half a second
I noticed he had his wrong arm back - who coaches him and doesnt realize he starts with his wrong arm back?
Jock will bwe fine. The season was too long for him.
was jock even ready to start? he looked like he didn't know it was time to start!

Even better for him--only had to run 1:48+. Might actually have a chance as he seems to have gotten that compulsive front running out of his system. Saving energy this time (hope Manzano takes notice). Ran about as slow as he could possibly get away with.
It's not compulsive at all, never was.
Even pace is for slugs with no speed.
Guys with 45 4x400 speed have been dominating the 800m since the late 1960s. Most of these guys feel best going out in 50 flat.

This happened to runners in the outside lane in at least two other heats. Not hearing the gun when they should for whatever reason.
Front runners waste too much energy in the heats, because they don't know how fast they need to go, while kickers can hang back and use only as much energy as they need to.
Kickers win.
Front runners run around with targets on their backs. KD seems to be figuring it out.
not my point at all.
I was saying that calling KD compulsive was inaccurate and also that going out in 50 makes much more sense when you can split 45 on the 4x400m. (Most everybody in a world champ 800m can split 45.5 at least.)
heats are not finals.
the 800m is not the 10000m.
Both Kaki and Rudisha chose to front run in heats.
Ask yourself why.
Can somebody remind how Mbulaeni Mulaudzi won the 800 at the 2009 world champs?

Jock said in an interview with the Orange County Register that he thought the starter would give the usual commands --to your marks, set and then the gun -- but he was caught flat-footed when the gun went off. Vin Lannana is a very good coach, but where are his assistants?? Not nearly as bad but shades of Munch '72 where an "all-American" coach read 19:00 hours as 9 pm and two sprinters missed the final!
Now I've not run anything over 400m for a while, but is there ever a 'set' command in an 800m?

NO.
To the guy who thinks EVERYONE can run 45.5 - tell that to Nick Symmonds. Doesn't mean that these "faster" guys can't go out fast, but it also doesn't mean that they always have to either. Kaki and Rusisha led to stay out of trouble, but it still takes a lot of energy to do so. Why did Kaki need to run that fast in the opening round? His fitness (based on the 3.31 1500m) is sound, but shows a lack of confidence in his ability to kick.
