I've been sick all summer and there's a big local race on tomorrow. Its the highlight of a local festival and a lot of my friends are doing it. i'm entered in it but am reluctant to compete because I'm in terrible shape. If i don't run it my friends will think I'm a little bitch...

Run it, man! Who cares if you run slow? Just think of it as a fun time, rather than some sort of test of your manhood. And don't worry about losing to your non-running friends. I could not run for a year and still beat my non-running friends - I'm sure you'll blow their doors off.
It sounds like you will have ego damage either way. If you run, you will not live up to your own expectations. If you don't, society will perceive you as a little bitch.
You can only control your expectations and actions. As the other wise fella said, just run the race for fun. Maybe you can run WITH your non running friends and forget about racing.

Get a family member or GF or BF or whatever to run it and then you can just jog along with them and that will be a perfect excuse to your friends on why you sucked (where were you bro? oh, i paced my mom...)
Does it really make a difference to non-running friends if you're a little out of shape? If you've spoken to any non-runners lately, according to them

well I think most would see a little difference between 13:45 and 21:45, but essentially yes anything under 20 would be very fast to them. Some people would definately see a 13:xx as otherwordly though by just calculating that its under 5 min per mile (which even most nonrunners who think they know stuff think is impressive).

If you are no longer sick and are physically able to run, I don't see what the problem is. You have a lot of catching up to do. Aren't you going to be training anyway?
You should probably sit this one out and focus on recovering; why let your ego run loose and let one off season race compromise your health. While we are on the subject, you should probably also finalize the sale of your testicles on craigslist, and study rugs: you need get used to the feeling of people walking all over you.
