If you look at the entry lists, Ethiopia's 5000 meter team consists of T. Bekele, Gebremeskel, Kuma, K. Bekele, and Merga. I assume Kuma may be the reserve if everybody else wants to run.

Alamirew took part in a number of 5000m diamond league races and he wasn't that sharp. But I don't think that is the reason he is dropped. My take is that he is injured during training for world champs. Even without the injury, this guy wasn't going to medal anyway. So it is not a big deal to give him time to adjust his training so he can be as sharp in the 5000m as he is right now over 3000m. Next year is the Olympics and he has another chance to showcase his talent!

He could always sell himself to Bahrain and get to the Worlds that way.

Well, for one there is no 3000m event in the Championships.

He is the 6th fastest Ethiopian at 5000m this year. Doesn't have the A standard for 1500m.

They don't have a Trials.

He hasn't beaten the other Ethiopians head to head.

Who is he supposed to replace, and tell me why that person didn't earn their spot.

Ethiopia is too deep to have a selection system that is not a straight Trials race or a specific event where there top three finishers are named to the team.

The larger point is that the fastest 3000 meter runner in the last 4 years would have had a shot at getting a medal in the 5000 (as 5000 meter championship races often turn into de facto 3000 meter events), and failing that possibility, he probably should have been advised to try to get a qualifier at 1500, which he clearly could have done, and he would have then been competing in Daegu...If you believe that a fast 3000 doesn't indicate ability at other distances, well then....

You know whats a better indicator of ability at other distances?.. Races at those other distances, oddly enough.

I don't think anyone is saying that he doesn't have a chance to medal at 5000.

I am saying that he didn't earn a spot on his team.

Merga, Gebremeskel and Tariku Bekele all beat him in Monaco at 5000m. And that was also a more recent race than the 3000 that Alamirew won.

Once you open the door and say that the top 3000m time trialers should be placed on the 5000 team over those that are better at 5000m, then... I just don't know where that will lead.

I am not even asserting that he earned his right to be on the Ethiopian team. However, I do feel track fans are somewhat deprived when the fastest 3000 meter runner in the last 4 years (and of course it was this year) is not competing in Daegu. Alamirew could have qualified in the 1500 and at least gained some experience in a championship. Your point regarding who one would toss aside to place him on the team at 5000 meters is a fair one...I guess I'll admit I'd rather see him compete than say, Abera Kuma, who Alamirew destroyed in Monaco, and who may not compete either, but at least he is on the entry lists....

OK. I can see putting him ahead of Kuma which gets him to be an alternate won't get him to the line.

I would like to see the IAAF just alow all 'A' qualifiers to compete at Worlds. Make the standards tougher if need be to set the right field.

I don't know why they limit it to three to a country.

I think when they allowed a 4th if a country has a reigning champion, it was a great idea.

But I say just let all of the top runners compete.

Letting one runner in before a faster runner just because their country has slower runners doesn't make sense.

World Championships should have all of the best in the world.

He can't be that good if Galen Rupp beat him (London), right?

Why does his 7:27 TIME TRIAL, and inability to run a good TIME TRIAL in the 5k this year mean he can race well in a championship race?
