No one promised you 4 years of injury-free NCAA competition.
You already have a regular redshirt year to cover one serious injury....you are already getting 5 years to complete 4 years of NCAA competition.
If your coach decides to redshirt you as a freshman....then tough if you get an injury later.
Maybe that would require coaches to be more cautious about redshirting their kids.

I thought that to get the 6th year medical redshirt, you had to have used your first redshirt for injury reasons - if your coach redshirted your first year just because, you were out of luck? Perhaps I'm wrong.
I was considering taking a 6th year while I was in grad school, after spending almost 3 full years of my five years of eligibility injured in some fashion, but decided against it. In the end, my 3 injured years had me rather jaded about the NCAA system, and I was tired of it. I don't regret my decision.

You may be right about the 1st redshirt, but still....
Dunno. Most of the distance runners at the World University Games seem to be 25 or 26.
Can't speak for everyone, but I sure wish I had a 6th year. I graduated in 4 1/2 years after transferring schools and taking a fall off because of prolonged mono going into my senior year. I was also undiagnosed iron depleted all those years (ferritin @ 11), so I never came anywhere close to my potential. Once I got that figured out immediately post graduation, I was a sub-30:00 guy within six months. Sure would've liked another year and maybe a master's degree.
