I have a question regarding getting an 8 year old ready for a 5k.
My 8 year old recently won the 1/2 mile race in his second grade class. I have noticed that he is not particularly fast, but seems to have good endurance.
Among the local 5k's here is a pretty big one over Labor Day weekend. My son has constantly asked me to let him run it, but I couldn't get him interested much in training for it. Since he won the 1/2 mile, his interest in running is high and he is serious now about training for the 5k.
Here's the problem: I have no idea where to begin or even if it's a safe thing to do. So, can you tell me if (1)it's OK for him to train for a 5k that is 3 1/2 months away and, if so, then (2) can you put together a simple training program to get him safely to the finish line.
He plays soccer, baseball and basketball, so he is used to running. Just not long distances.
Thanks for your input. It is greatly appreciated.
