You'd think median here is 99.7% percentile in test scores with sub 4:10 mile AND sub 2:18 marathon speed.
How shitty the weather is where they live.

Absolutely the number one thing is the difficulty of conditions during their PR.

I heard about a guy who ran 30:00 for the 10k backwards, while giving a lecture on rocket science and doing his taxes in Chinese. That's worth at least 29:00.

haha, I fit right into all of these (except the beer one).
How they ran fast PRs off of average/no talent.
"I'm a totally average guy--really not built for the sport at all. I'm built more like a linebacker than a runner and if I stopped training seriously for a few months I'd get back to my body's natural weight of 235lbs in no time. When I was running 35mpw, I was a 54 minute 5K guy. Anyway, after years of hard mileage, I was able to run 14:20 for my college team."

I'm a father of 4 young kids, work 60 hours a week while working towards my PhD. I volunteer at the local animal shelter and taking lessons to learn Mandarin on the side....and I still have time to run 120 miles per week and sleep 10 hours a night. And I don't even have it that bad.
