My buddy lent me a book called Chasing Ghosts a couple of weeks ago. It's by somebody named Philip J Reilly. I enjoyed it. Thought it gave an entertaining insight into a runner's world and head.
If you can find it, "The Lonely Breed" is a *great* read. Maybe a dozen or so (IIRC) chapters about distance runners' most significant races. The chapter about Kuts and Pirie (1956 OG 10,000m), by itself, made the book worthwhile--what a psych-up!
Ditto "The Jim Ryun Story."
Silly runner: Books don't read. People read books.
My personal favorite is Running With The Buffalos. If you like Once a Runner, I'll put a second vote in for Chasing Ghosts. I prefer truth over fiction, however, so nothing tops Running With the Buffalos.
The Jim Ryun Story by Corder Nelson
In Quest of Gold - The Jim Ryun Story by Jim Ryun

A Cold Clear Day is of the best running books ever, including excerpts from Buddy's training and comments from Fred Wilt, his advisor.
The Bible.

"Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, about Louis Zamperini, american miler in the 1930s who may have become the first 4 minute miler if not for WWII.
"What I Talk About When I Talk About Running" by Haruki Murakami. Not the type of book that will get you all fired up in a rowdy way. But an entertaining sort of running/life journal that I could see a lot of runners connecting to.
I just read Chasing Ghosts on my Kindle. It's a good "everyman" kind of running story about chasing one's dreams while balancing stuff like job and family.
Always have been a fan of Once a Runner.
While not sold on the "science" I did find Born to Run entertaining and motivating.

Not a running book, but the Alchemist is a great read about chasing your dreams.

The Men of Oregon is a good read about Bowerman and I found it motivational. On the fiction side, Once a Runner and Chasing Ghosts are both quite good.
