It's that time of the year again. For those runners out there that are gonna be fasting during the month of Ramadan, I'd like to hear some sage words of advice. Hell, I could even use sage advice from people with expertise in nutrition and training while fasting.
For the next month, I won't be eating or drinking from sunrise to sunset (roughly a 14 hour fast per day) while doing roughly 35mpw of running with an additional 140mpw of cycling. I know, the actual running is not that much but the cycling will take some of the edge off training twice a day while giving me pretty significant aerobic benefits.
I'm still in the 'base-building' phase of my training, so here's my plan:
1. Wake up around 4am, go for a 5 mile run. Some days, I'll do a tempo with a warm-up/cooldown, but ultimately it's gonna add up to 5 miles a day.
2. Eat recovery meal in preparation for the day's fast. staples: rice, chocolate milk/protein powder mix, mixed vegetables, banana, lean meat
3. Fast. Work during weekdays, will start classes in about 2 weeks from now.
4. Around 6pm, go for a 24 mile bike ride (equivalent to about 6 miles of running). 3 days of the week I'll do lactate threshold intervals and the other 4 will be easy rides.
5. Eat recovery meal after sundown.
staples: chocolate milk/protein powder mix, tuna, lean meat, pasta, salad
6. Hydrate with lots of water before calling it a night early around 10.
This is gonna be my fist time training while fasting, so it's gonna be rough. Any advice with training and/or nutrition would be greatly appreciated. Emphasis on the nutrition.
I know LRC will be very quick to criticize, but this is something I want to seriously commit to.
