You are part of the team and receive all the benefits of being on the team, such as travel expenses and uniforms, however you do not get any money from an athletic scholarship.
A walk-on is a non-recruited non-scholarship athlete. A successful walk-on might earn a scholarship or partial scholarship for later years of eligibility. A guy or gal that walks-on to a top program is a badass.
