Bob Babbit: Maybe Marc will make a comeback for the 2004 Olympics
Davis: Maybe for America Samoa.
Later on the show:
Speaking to an athlete who won a contract with Nike who is going to be on a billboard adversting Nike.
Davis: I never got a billboard!
Guest: I feel like a player coach.
Davis: That is where I am at.
Of course, these quotes were taken out of context. He actually came off as a pretty good side kick to Bob on the show.
Davis bitter towards Nike and going to compete for America Somoa in 2004?

A little background maybe is needed. Bob Babbitt has a radio program on Sunday nights. Marc Davis was on the radio show. This particular show mostly interviewed local coaches from the area. One guy they interviewed went on and on about testing lactic acid of his athletes. Davis admitted he didn't know much about the laboratory stuff this psuedo science guy was talking about. I give Davis credit here for not pretending to be a know it all.

Fine, but are you then going to give Davis your money to use what he doesn't know to coach you? -

Did Davis ever claim to know how to use this stuff or say he does use it?
I highly doubt that Davis is strapping equipment to people and pretending he knows how to use it. I don't know of many coaches besides Salazar and the like that use all that stuff anyway. Can't coaches just give workout plans that are designed for their runners without knowing their exact VO2 max? -

No, he just uses his name and world-class athletic ability to get on the stage as an "equal" with someone who does.

And compete with the rest of the world now? No.
And anyone who thinks coaching recreational runners is Davis goal doesn't know Davis very well. He'll take whatever his athletic name can get him regardless of whether or not he's qualified for a position. A big clue is in my thread "The DOC is a quack", whrein davis mentions getting a USATF certificate and he would then be qualified to coach a national team, if he wants. (And he would want.)
Such aims are fine if they are backed up by the education and training to earn them. Not so fine if they are sought by taking the easy path of using name and celebrity.
People like me are tired of seeing the embracing of mediocrity in this country by qualified people getting passed up for leadership positions so those positions can be charitably given out to unproven "stars." The American Love of Celebrity erroneously gives a person who achieves competency in one discipline automatic status and position in a second discipline simply because of who they are and that they ask for it. That's wrong, and Davis is a shining example of that perverse ideal.
