The Ten Worst States for Distance Running

It's actually not too bad of a list, but NJ is a big miss. Quite close to NY/NYC for competition, racing purposes. Gags just set up shop at Rutgers for anyone worthy, and you can actually hold a high paying job while running there unlike the other states. NJ HS runners are some of the most successful.

1. Nebraska

7. South Dakota

Gold medalist was born and raised in these two states. All that wind and snow can only help build the toughness for a kick for the win from lane 5.

Just off the top of my head NJ has Joetta Clark, Hazel Clark, Marty Liquori, Robby Andrews. Revise your list.

Missouri and Minnesota should not be on there. Tennessee and West Virginia are far worse running states.

That doesn't really mean too much. It's like saying you're the tallest midget.

NJ big mistake. It makes your list look stupid because everybody bags on NJ but everybody in the running community knows the rich history of NJ running.

When was the last time you heard about a distance runner from Hawaii?

Montana?

Methinks distance running geeks usually put Minnesota in the top 5 not the bottom ten. Turd.

I told you not to respond. Minnesota is too cold in the winter. Watch the movie Fargo and get back to me. Yes, I know Fargo is in North Dakota, but most of the action happened in Minnesota. Missouri is hot and miserable in the summer and still gets cold winters. Neither state has mountains. Tennessee and West Virginia have nice winters, miles of trails, and lots of different types of terrain.

Most of Montana and Alaska both have great weather three seasons of the year and mountain trails to run on. Hawaii has consistent weather, incredible views, one of the largest marathons in the world, and some of the most varied terrain on the planet. Hawaii makes the top 10.

Me thinks brutal winters, too many mosquitos, and too much concrete outweigh a crop of pretty good distance runners, many who choose not to live in Minnesota year round. Me also thinks you need to listen to my instructions and not respond. It will prevent you from making a fool of yourself.

In the past 2 years in Nj there had been over 10 sub 9 minute 3200m runners, and two of those were capable of sub 8:40 (Cheserek and Joe Rosa). I think that NJ belongs in the top five best states for distance running, at least for high school.

Bad air quality, too much traffic, too much concrete, and the state just pretty much sucks.

This isn't Dyestat.com. New Jersey ranks in the top 5 of states with the most reality television shows per capita. That's about it.

A few washed up sprinters and middle distance runners do not factor in to my ratings. You leave rating worst running states to me and I'll leave digging into issues of Track and Field news from the 1980s and 1990s to you.
