With running not every race is a time trial.

I'm not in high school, so I don't care what would make me more popular there, and I didn't care even when I was in high school. But since you asked, I wasn't a social outcast then either. I didn't go to parties, but I did go home from prom with three of my best friends to this day. We had a Nerf gun war in my basement. All of us still say it's one of our best memories.

The real losers are those who insult others for being passionate about something. (And unfortunately, this board has more than its share of those, although some of them are just trolls and trolls trolling trolls.)

Let me very, VERY reluctantly defend this place...this is an internet message board. They are by nature horrible, horrible places. The most obnoxious, loud, and annoying people dominate them. But this is true of every message board around every sport. Go hop over to reddit and visit any of the "real" team sports boards you mentioned. I guarantee they are just as horrible. The difference here is that there is no up/down voting, so every horrible post is treated equally. Which, arguably, can be possibly viewed as a positive characteristic, oddly.

So let me push back a little. It's 2016. Internet communities have been around a while. Shouldn't you know by now not to take them too seriously? Read any YouTube comments section. Its not an accurate cross section of people. If it was, well, God help us all. I wouldn't be able to get through a day in life. People are crazy, but the internet is an especially fertile place for loud, angry, self-empowered crazies to spew filth.

Runners are amazing people. Some of them are incredibly mean-spirited, but it's simply wrong to beleive that the majority of the community is like that.

If you are mentally stuck in high school, then you have other issues than running being uncool.

You mean the guys who can't get into college and mostly end up going to prison for drug dealing, robbery and rape? Yeah, those guys do seem to get a lot of chicks in high school. The more athletically gifted ones do go to college, then go to prison for drug dealing, robbery and rape (RIP Lawrence Phillips.)

I used to work in high schools. It was teaching extra curricular activities that were not sports. I worked in schools of all shapes and sizes. I taught at a catholic school that had a USA Today ranked football team and basketball team. I taught at a giant public school with in excess of 1,200 kids in a class. I taught at tiny rural public schools, inner city schools with metal detectors and wealthy suburban and private schools where kids drove BMWs and Audis to school. What was very interesting was how team sports affected how students interacted. By and large, schools where teams were very successful or where team sports were held in high regard by administrators, there was a very noticeable division between "jocks" and the rest of the school. More often than not, it lead to negative behavior (bullying, cliques, etc.) among the "jock" kids (which included cheerleaders and girls who dated jocks). Some schools worked very hard to address this behavior and had varying amounts of success and failure. What was remarkable was how this sort of social stratification almost disappeared at schools where team sports either did not exist (hard to cobble together a football team at a private school with 150 kids) or were just an afterthought. There were still popular kids and the usual teen cliques, but there was a noticeable day to day difference in the way kids interacted and a substantial reduction in the amount of bullying and bad behavior.

There are always cliques in almost any kind of social sphere. Running clubs, walking groups, whatever kind of regular groups.

A lot depends on a particular personality. Outgoing people always have an easier time and fall into cliques much easier. Often, sadly, it's the shyer, quieter ones, or those who may have issues, etc. who get targeted for bullying, being teased, ragged on, talked about.

ultimate frisbee, video games, skateboarding, skiing, weed.... nothing i do is cool for a 27 year old, don't see why running would be any different
