I think this goes to show that Robby doesn't do enough aerobic strength work, albeit he was injured for some time so I can't be too critical.
He just couldn't make it through the rounds this time. I think Vig is doing everything perfect with this kid but upping his mileage may help.
Overall, this was a disappointing run but it will serve as motivation in the future for Robby.
Well maybe you could fill me in. Is he injured? The kid runs 50 mpw last time I checked.

When it comes to running with the big boys Jock is just faster. Robby got lucky at NCAAs.
Robby Andrews is a huge loser. Just like Andrew Wheating, Chris Solinsky, Lopez Lomong, Lolo Jones, Tyson Gay, Wallace Spearmon, etc, etc. Ritz, Hall, Webb and Meb didn't even show up the trials. Total losers, the whole lot.

Am I the only one that thinks he didn't try? Don't get me wrong, KD and Symmonds and Jock kicked his butt. On the homestretch, when the camera briefly showed his face, he looked totally 100% relaxed. I want to see an interview foremost.

Personally, I think he just realized he didn't have it in him. I could be wrong, but it seemed to me that he could have at least gone 1:47-48 but realized that he definitely was not gonna catch that top 3. Never know though, could have tweaked something that we couldn't see.

I want to clarify that I am not hating on Robby. Aerobic strength carries you through many rounds and I was wondering if there wasn't any gas left in the tank by the final.
I personally believe an 800 runner of Robby's ability should be doing 40-50 mpw when he is peaking. But 80-90 mile weeks and endurance workouts during the base phase. At the moment Robby is probably limited by his low mileage during high school and Vig is still building him up.
I read an Nichole Teter interview a few years ago and Coach Gags convinced her doing 5k training in the fall would make all the difference. She had a great summer and made the Olympic team in Beijing.
I would leave the coaching to his actual coach Vig. He has progressed nicely from 1:48 in HS to 1:44 a few weeks ago. Theyre doing something right. He just had nothing todya.
One thing to consider is that a lot of college underclassmen can be very immature and take their talent for granted. It could be something stupid such as he hadn't eaten properly before the race or he had too hard of workout just before the race. Or maybe he got really drunk last night. He was in Eugene after all and said "he had a lot of fun".
Maybe this is not the case at all, but I wouldn't put it past him. Its easy to forget that you have to take great care to be sure you are primed for a race. One stupid thing can blow it.
I think the most likely explanation is that he's young. He hasn't had the time to build up a monster aerobic base, and then when he got injured this past Fall/Winter, that makes a bigger impact on someone that's been running a few years, compared to someone that's been running over a decade.
Robby Andrews is a huge talent. I'm not too concerned about this result. From his interviews, he seems to have his head on his shoulders and much more mature than several veteran runners.

Kid didn't have it today. None of you really know why. Maybe he intentionally peaked for NCAA's--in which case, mission accomplished. No need to get angry, bitter, or sarcastic. I'm sure he and/or his coach will offer reasons, by and by. This is a non-thread. His non-performance was a surprise--I'm sure I wasn't the only LRer standing in front of the set, expecting fireworks--but it strikes me as no more than a minor bump in the road. This is a conspicuously talented guy who will be back for more. Can anybody really dispute that statement?
