The correct answer is that they're pretty close.
Rupp's jog 28:38 tonight was at 2:52 per km pace.
In his 1:26:47 30k, Mosop ran the first 15k at 2:55/km and the second 15k at 2:51/km. This should help to show just how little of a factor Rupp is likely to be on the world stage.
This race was a total embarrassment. Kenyans who see the USATF results must think it's a typo, but indeed 28:38 takes a win at our WC trials.
I closed my debut marathon faster than your best run 10,000 at your nationals. Just sayin'.

the first 3 posts are making direct comparisons to real competitive marks of the best kenyan marathoners.....
another comparison to make is to look at 10km World Champ times and how each race was won including heats....
The big question is: Why are none of these other guys who didn't have standard not pushing the pace. Did they all think they could out kick Rupp and Tegenkamp.
I don't blame those guys; they already had standard. Some of those others, like Nelson, have to push the pace and quit wimping out.
They should have cut out 9200m and just had them run an 800. Would have saved a lot of time and effort. People might have even stayed awake. After watching the Pre Classic 10k this one is just silly in comparison.
I would have to say this is the equivalent to winning the World Series off of walks...with a home run to end it. Riveting!
I doubt the Kenyans think much of this result at all. If they're actually interested, they already know the stats on the mzungus. This was a selection race, nothing more. Kenya had some thrilling Nat Champs last year though...
LOL. I started the thread, and came back to see 12 posts arguing if it was all the same person posting. No, it wasn't.
And that pace was still a total joke.
Kenyans who have seen the result are starting their afternoon tempo runs at 5 minute mile pace today, laughing and saying "look, I'm winning the US championships!"
