Sorry, was this supposed to be a rant against the 1600 and 3200? I've been a high school official, and at some of those meets people have trouble counting to four and eight; adding additional starting lines for the mile and deuce would just get people confused.
Anyway, IIRC NYS used to have very separate boys' and girls' HS T&F structures. The girls' chair, with some background (I believe) in international track, made the 1500/3000 decision very early in the history of girls' T&F at the State level (like mid-70s). The boys' chair (or coaches) wanted to stay as close to mile/two as possible, for as long as possible.
Unless I'm wrong. Please correct me, if so.
Oh, and the 1600/3200 are going to be around at the HS level for a long, long time. Deal.
