When you look at it that way, the real contenders are pretty spread out.

With McNamara and Batty in heat one for starters, it is a reasonably difficult heat. Then being that it is heat one, they have the disadvantage of not knowing any of the heat times. It seems very event overall between the three heats, but heat three (if any) is the more difficult, but with the advantage of knowing winning times from heats one and two. The OP is paranoid.

Heat one has one person that is among the favorites to make the team. Wheating

Heat two has 4 people that have been in the discussion. Manzano, Torrence (3:34 last year), Centro (NCAA champ) and Ulrey (made 2009 USA team)

Heat three has 3 that have been favored. Lomong, Brown (fastest this year) and Lagat who may not show

Nope. Nice try, though.

Batty, Acosta and Jager are at the bottom of the 13 guys you mention (and it's not even close) and Symmonds probably won't run.

Why no mention of Blankenship? Batty, Acosta and Jager are all in much better form than him? You believe that? It's not clear that they're in any better current form than the Millers or Bolas (second tier guys), much less Blankenship.

Would anybody in Heat 1 trade spots with somebody from Heats 2 or 3? Would anybody from Heats 2 and 3 NOT trade spots with somebody from Heat 1?

The guys in Heat 1 caught a break, that's how life works sometimes.
