That doesn't sound like the thoughts of someone who is on good terms with Rupp. He didn't know about the pollen count issue, but is is interesting that he said that. Could there be some bad blood between the two? Maybe Solinsky is annoyed at the comments from Salazar the other day about people just sitting on Rupp last year and out-sprinting him.

They are competitors and do not like each other nor do their coaches like each other.
Fact: Salazar and Jerry's relationship ended the day Chris stole Rupp's thunder and broke 'his' AR in the 10k.
Fact: Nike flew a special camera crew to Palo Alto to make a documentary of Rupp breaking the AR (Phil even took the private jet down to watch Rupp make history). Instead they filmed Chris breaking the AR.... and promptly abandoned the project. Why haven't we seen any of that footage? HD cameras?
Fact: There is bad blood.
galen's a whiner. he as a "stew room" in the house with pictures of Chris. he's punched walls, thrown darts, etc. there is a small corner of the room once dedicated to Josh McDougal.
was a huge fan of both until this debacle and still am but lost a decent bit of respect for both today
solinsky: if the only reason you enterred this race was to keep Rupp from breaking your record...weak...run the race because it gives you the best opportunity to have the best season possible, if it doesn't, dont panic that someone else will break it and have faith that you'll be able to take it back...and especially don't make comments like this publicly (same thing when he bitched about teg after the 08 trials)
Rupp: no problem with him pulling out due to allergies and I want to give him the benefit of the doubt but don't see any reason to warm up other than to mess with solinsky
bottom line, you are both Americans, teammates, and adults...grow the f*** up
I think this whole debacle is representative of the state of American distance running.
It's become all about gamesmanship and scientifically calculating the odds of success.
Seriously, Rupp says he's gonna run a race, people spend hard earned money to come watch him run and it's all some maneuverer to mess with Solinsky's head. That is so juvenile it makes me sick.
All these groups are so petty with each other. Don't they realize that the public at large doesn't really care and that by fighting they're simply wasting their time?
Pro runners seem really soft. Like all of the stars have to align for them to take to the line. Can you imagine if people were actually paying attention to this sport? You can't even have a rivalry if they never race each other. These egos have gotten way out of hand. Just run and take the criticism if it doesn't go well.

Because Solinsky isn't afraid to woop some ass. Rupp's alergies? Yeah right, it was rainy all day and the pollen count was practically zero. It was a perfect day and Rupp didn't run because if he did, it would have meant his AR would have been taken away by, you guessed it, Solinsky. No way he would have dropped out if Rupp was in that race, bad hammy or not.

The pollen wasn't bad, but you are lying about the rain. Was there all day, and it definitely wasn't "rainy all day." You must be thinking about the previous day?

After: 1) getting a collegue to sub my last class of the day so 2)I could get the family packed and off to Eugene, 3) to check in to a $119 a night hotel, I was also disappointed to see the anticipated American record showdown dissolve. I was flabergasted though watching the LR interview with Solinsky after his DNF. He was still sporting the Livestrong yellow bracelet even after all the bad press Lance has gotten this past week.
How about Sol just ran to protect his record? I think thats awesome and I wish other people had that mentality in our sport.
When Rupp knew Sol was going to run he may have decided to act like he was going to run warm up and just slip out on the way to the starting line. That way Sol runs a decent portion of the race looking for him and cant come back the next day 100% fresh. If Rupp runs the two mile today he is a GENIUS an evil genius but still.

I just don't think Sol was in the right to suggest Rupp had some devious plot against Sol. I agree. This "Solinsky was just running to protect his record" thing doesn't hold up to logic. So if Rupp had started and was on 26:50 pace through 9K, Solinsky would have been too? But because Rupp doesn't start then Solinsky loses the ability to better his AR? Either he could or couldn't last night.
I think he was more pissed he couldn't take advantage of this kind of field at home without having to go to europe than making another required rupp tribute without even knowing what was going on. Why does everything have to be so rupp-centric. Even on Mo's best day he had to pay tribute to rupp.
Let's be honest, a rivalry would be great for the sport. If only they could close the gap to become not just medal threats, but medal favorites.
Just imagine if there were two American distance runners that were two of the best in the world and had a fierce rivalry.
I've heard several stories from people who have met each of these guys. Solinsky comes off as a class act pretty much across the board. People talk about him with excitement and admiration. I am a little surprised that he has let Rupp affect him in any way.
Rupp on the other hand I never hear anything overwhelmingly positive. Never heard anything bad necessarily either, but people seem to be lukewarm toward him.
Not that any of this matters-- Michael Jordan is a first-class dickhead after all.
