Yes, collage running. Very difficult to win when you are clustered in there with all the pictures of everyone else.
would you rather have him run against other high schoolers where he laps the entire field? He is obviously on a different level than every high schooler in the county (other than cheserek), and he wants to have races to prepare him for collage running where he will probably get beaten pretty good very often.
Probably not. There is a big difference between getting getting "sucked" to a fast time in a mile when you are going to be able to hang longer and not have to run by yourself for as much of the race and getting sucked to a fast time in a 5k where there is a 45s+ gap between you and the next guy, sure he may get sucked along for the first mile but then, after running that first mile he is going to be gassed, have two miles to go and be promptly dropped (unless the pace is slow), and then have to finish the last two miles of the race by himself, exhausted from going out to hard. Sounds like a recipe for a major bonk to me. I mean I don't care if he does it, I guess he has earned the right to do it, but I think its not a good idea and probably won't even be interesting for most of the race. Now if they have a pacer specifically for him I guess he would have a better chance, but why do that and have him in the race with all the big names? He could just run his own race with his own personal pacer and do that and not get in the way of the big names as they lap him...oh well. IMO, the only reason this is being done is for publicity for the meet, absolutely no other logical reason.
cause he wants to get sucked to a fast time, thats how you get fast times and big pr's, you run with guys waay faster than you. how the hell do you think Webb was able to run as fast as he did back when he got his record? what about wheating, he had a 3:58 pr for the mile yet not only did he get a huge pr and not have any1 ask why he was in the bowerman mile as opposed to the international mile, but he ran damn well. it's not humiliating when everyone clearly knows he's not gonna win (unless it goes like the BAA road mile), he's only a highschooler so no pressure on him to win anything, and everyone already knows he's only going for one thing; the highschool record. how do you think german fernandez ran his AJR for the 5k? he was lucas' age when he did that and had a pr at the time that wasnt substantially better than lucas' is right now. and need i remind you lucas' 5k pr is 14:06 for indoors, which if he were to go for a fast time outdoors would be mid to low 13:50's.
Good point, as per the Rupp thread, if Lukas is 100% healthy, not banged up or sick then he'll destroy that Fernandez record. Now, where's that Chet guy to spend 4 pages arguing that "depending on what kind of shape" someone is could be applied to anyone, when it everyone except intelligent understands what it means in context.
Depending on what kind of shape Verzbicas is in, I think Fernandez's record is toast
