An article from Kenya says the following about Sammy Wanjiru's funeral:

I've looked up his career marathons and none of them were held on Wednesday. His world half-marathon world record wasn't set on a Wed either. Does anyone know what they are talking about?

I've never been to Africa, but here in Thailand it's about the same: THEY JUST DON'T THINK THE SAME WAY WE DO!!

Wednesday could be Sunday or it could be Friday. Who knows!? The Kenyans live in their own little universe.

My best guess would be some low-key marathons in Kenya on a Wednesday when he was growing up which are maybe becoming more popular with young Kenyans before we even hear about them running 'real' marathons. I Googled for marathons in Kenya and found a trail marathon held on a Thursday.

or the author doesn't get the whole "10k marathon is not a marathon" thing...

You are either ignorant or an idiot. Kenyans follow the calender like everyone else. The newspaper is stating the facts wrong. Wednesday was Wanjiru's best day not because he won marathons bc he never did. The story in this paper is misleading.
