El Guerrouj does exemplify perseverance, but his two Olympic losses are hardly good examples of why he might have quit. In my view, even though you came up short in the Olympics, when you win EVERY SINGLE other race you're entered in, it's pretty easy to take heart.
No, the bigger obstacles, by far, would have to be complacency, laziness, and lack of focus. Just think of the discipline it takes to live the life he does, year in and year out.
