Yenew Alamirew Running Hengelo 5000 (Hermens Compares Him To Komen)

I'll say Alamirew wins here in 12:53. I'll also predict that Alamirew wins at 5000 in Daegu and that Merga wins 10,000 in Daegu. However, it is a bit early to be confident about predictions for Daegu...and Koech is the real deal.

Kenenisa won't be ready this year to be a world champion. Tariku has a better chance this year than Kenenisa.

I think Alamirew will clock 12:50 and obviously looks to be the man to beat in Daegu. Merga on the other hand is capable of winning either 5000m or 10000m in Daegu. He has developed alot of confidence since last year and really I. Koech has the talent but he seems to be still learning how to race. In Rome on Thursday, he seemed to allow himself to get boxed in and after the last pacemaker dropped out, he did not seem to know what to know exactly how to react. The pace slowed down until Vincent Chepkok volunteered to push the pace. So I would say that unless someone who likes to push, like Kipchoge, is in the race, looks to me like Koech will not win. He is not used to running from the front. We'll see how he does tomorrow in Hengelo.

Where else is he supposed to come from but nowhere? It's not like results for the Oromo Championships or the Club Championships are done by FlashResults.

With a guy like this, someone at GSC would have gotten a call or email saying, "We've got a new guy here that ran really well at the Club Champs and he's killing the guys in the group. We should really get this guy a race soon." He was third in the 5000m at their nationals, and that's a good enough result that they can go to a meet organizer that's friendly and ask for a visa letter so he can get to Europe and race (if you think he's good enough, you'd pay the ticket yourself).

It looks like he won all the races he ran (three races on the Flanders Cup) and then they wanted to get him in a fast race before the season ended, and Milan was it. It's going to be a race when he and Merga meet over 5000m. I think this is the guy that's going to make Merga focus on the 10000m at Daegu.

Excuse my ignorance, but is this meet closed to USA athletes or was there a time standard and the USA didn't have anyone qualify? This is a honest question.

If you look at Kenenisa in 2003, the summer he turned 21, as Alamirew just turned 21, this is what you'll see:

5/10 Ethiopian Championships: Sihine destroys KB on the last lap, 13:35 to 13:47 (2nd)

6/1 Hengelo: KB 26:53 (1st)

6/27 Oslo: KB 12:52 (1st)

7/1 Lausanne: KB 13:06 (1st)

7/11 Rome: KB is outkicked by Chebii 12:57.14 to 12:57.34 (2nd)

8/24 Paris World Champs: 26:49 (1st) 12:53 (3rd)

My point is simply that Alamirew is young as Kenenisa was in 2003 and that one should not read too much into a single race, especially as Alamirew did not run smart in Hengelo, at least not if his only goal was winning. Alamirew sure looks like a tremendous runner, a potential world champion this fall, and nothing he did in Hengelo alters my viewpoint one iota...
