Bolt 9.91, Powell 9.93, Lemaitre 10.00

And whomever wrote that Lemaitre would be lucky to make finals at WC this year might want to take a look at this race.

I doubt he'll medal, but he's got a decent shot at making the final in the 100.

The story this year will be who is left standing at the end of the season, given everyone's recent injury status.

Guys like Lemaitre, Carter, Blake, etc. should fare well, but the top 3? Not so sure...

And Kim Collins! Not sure what his time was, but right on! He was a credible competitor, no matter what anybody says. If he had a finish, he would be amazing.

I think you're joking but I think when Bolt wins worlds you will see him clown and put on quite a show.

What's Bolt going to do this year when everyone is even with him at 50m? Powell has a great start. Gay has been working on his start. Blake starts like Powell now. Carter rocks the first 50m. Lemaitre MIGHT have a 50m by the end of the season.

And Lemaitre, Blake and Gay can FINISH, too, as could Powell if he relaxed.

Maybe Bolt was tired, I know travel is tough, maybe this time particularly sucked for him somehow...maybe bad food, maybe a bad bed, bad sleep, bad flight, new country with unfamiliar facilities, etc..

What I want to see is Bolt running against other Jamaicans IN JAMAICA.

Now THAT would be a race--Bolt, Powell, Carter, Blake, Bailey, Frater, Mullings, Forsythe. They should have their own series of races, every weekend, over 100m and 200m, televise it to the world, and forget about other meets.

Some facts:

Wind +0.6

Collins had a crap RT of .216, he could shave off roughly .1 and he would have run 10.02

Lemaitre's RT was excellent at .129 -- now THERE was a guy ready to go.

Bolt slacked at .174, totally mediocre.

It's unbelievable how fast Bolt is. He runs what can be dissected as a crappy race, that looked like garbage, and he still runs 9.91, and would have been sub-9.9 if he hadn't been asleep in the blocks. Amazing.

Is it reasonably possible for Bolt to run ABOVE 10.00? In past years, we've seen him essentially jog sub-10.

There is Bolt, and there is everybody else.

9.91 (+0.6) = 9.94 corrected - Bolt

9.80 (+2.2) = 9.89 corrected - Blake

At this level, that is a significant difference.

But, that is a 9.94 with huge room for improvement, versus a 9.89 that looked like an excellent race.

Bolt is the man.

Sprint Geezer, welcome back after having had your feelings hurt. I just knew that you'd be able to recover, with or without PEDs. Your recovery appears to be a clean one.

Problems with Bolts race:

Bad reaction time, Horrible going out of the blocks, Horrible start/Acceleration phase, Bad middle of the race section, Not his strongest end, and absolutely NO LEAN at the line. And he hasn't raced for 9 months and is not even in great shape yet. Hard to be disappointed with a run like that(considering the mistakes). He should have run over 10 secs even for him!

Worth at least a low to mid- 9.7 100m with the problems above corrected. I have to expect him to run low 9.6s or so at the WCHS this year and once again dominate... I mean, it would have been bad if he ran a perfect race and run that time but talk about mistakes...Has to be happy with his overall performance(when you consider everything).

Well, I am sure you wouldn't risk being busted while bringing up the rear in the peloton, as that would be a tad embarrassing.

After being folded up in buses, trains, and economy-class airplane seating, I returned home with a sore right knee. After my first track workout (which was GREAT!) my knee swelled up, and I've been hobbling around for a week, limping.

I'm pretty sure I severely strained/partially tore my popliteus tendon, or something along those lines, based on a self-diagnosis. I have the sense that I'll recover, as it is nothing like when I tore my acl in my other knee.

But I'll be out for at least a month, is my sense. F*&K.

I hate traveling and not working out hard--it is brutal.

Not training KILLS athletes.

I will NEVER not train for a month-and-a-half again.

If I ever get healthy again, I will NEVER take time off, until I die--like that 80+ guy who ran the WR marathon recently. Except when I'm in the boreal forest, of course, where it is rather difficult to find a place to run.

Maybe I can do drills at the campsite.

WHAT? You mean "hard to be disappointed with a WIN like that", don't you?

It is easy to be disappointed by a run full of mistakes. The whole point of the 100m is to NOT MAKE MISTAKES. You do, and you lose (unless you're Bolt).

The point of training is to ensure that you do NOT make mistakes.

You should always aim to run a mistake-free race, at differing levels of effort in different races at different times of the year--that's why guys like Powell don't necessarily win races like this one, but look very good coming in second.

It's nice to know that Bolt still wants to WIN, forget about running a clean race. I take back some of what I said earlier, about his maturity--thinking about it now, that race full of mistakes, that race that he WON, speaks volumes about his competitiveness.

Problem is, not running your own race is when you make mistakes, and when Bolt isn't ahead at 30m, he is not running his own race.

As tautological as it sounds, Bolt needs to be his best in order to beat Gay and Blake. If he's not, he'll end up second to Gay, like he did last year, because he will make mistakes.

Mistakes against Powell and Lemaitre are one thing, mistakes against Gay (and I think Blake) are another thing entirely.

Bolt has always had a lousy start (partly due to his height, IMO), but makes up for it with a fantastic top-end speed and speed endurance. If he runs enough races, now & then he'll have a good RT combined with a good start & drive phase, and he'll run outrageous WR-ish times. When he doesn't, he's still in the 9.85-9.90 area for a 'bad race'.

Asafa looked so very strong through 70m, maybe 80m. He just couldn't hold it. I can empathize; I was outrageous over 55m, destroying the competition from RT/start to 60, but was already tanking at 80y and just hoping to hang on before getting caught from behind (and merely adequate in the 200y). At his age, he'll never beat the likes of Bolt, Gay, Blake ever again. Yet he's still one of the greatest sprinters ever, despite "never winning the big one."

Yohan Blake should be a sight to watch over the next 5-8 years. I am QUITE intrigued by his potential.

Lemaitre really impressed me; at about 30m, he was 6th as far as I could tell, but he passed 3 others from 40m-90m. Nice top end acceleration. I was skeptical of the 'GWH' hype before, but I have to admit this kid really does have a nice top-end. He'll have a nice career, unfortunately overshadowed by 3-5 outstanding others who will perpetually keep him barely out of the medals. But I could see him hitting 9.90 someday... which is really not shabby.

Given his young age, I think Lemaitre's ceiling is 9.7ish around age 25-27.
