Sort of looked like a prelim effort where he went out a bit too easy and had to push it at the end to avoid getting cut from the next round. There was no acceleration out of the drive. He picked it up just enough at the end to edge Asafa. But, it is hard to tell whether this was full out or whether Bolt is just getting warmed up for Daegu.
How was Jmee Samuels allowed to be in that race? 10.4 is pretty pathetic.
Probably grimacing because he had a lot of work to do after that atrocious start. I think he still has it.
On one of the replays on the BBC you could see Bolt was all out and grimacing. Powell on the other hand looks very relaxed. hmmm
There were so many mistakes in that race it had to be at least worth a mid 9.7.... I'm telling you...that was worth a mid 9.7.

Watching it on a small screen made it look like a veeeery long drivephase. He pushed the last 20 to draw even and pass. Bolts mass gain will shift the cengrav and it takes awhile to get the muscle memory to reimprint.
9.91 in a race that was far from technically sound in May.
The poster that did the "worth 9.7 mid" troll got me to thinking Bolt over/under goodrace/badrace IS mid 9.7 ?!!!
Any idea of temp and humidity #s. All the 400m guys looked crapped out on the runin.
Bolt is done!!! I'm calling it! that's .33 seconds off his PB from two years ago. DONE!!!!!!!!!!
hes obv not done but he better duck tyson gay for a few weeks/months
Anyone else think Powell let Bolt win?
Bolt looked like he was working hard... but still - he won and he ran 9.91 which is pretty good for a season opener.
The real question is how he'll do against Tyson Gay, who looks to be in pretty good form right now.
no.
Bad starts like that are bound to happen when you haven't been racing. The quick starts will come back after a few races.
Also, I have a feeling a bunch of distance runners commenting on sprinting is no different from regular sports channels' "coverage" of distance events.
Bolt will run 9.71 next race and let off at 35m to go. Asafa will break the wr next year.
If he starts like that against Gay, he won't catch him. Gay closes as fast as anyone and doesn't break down like Powell does at the end of races.
Nobody will break that record in our lifetime, not even Bolt himself.
I'd put money on it, but I would have difficulty collecting.
It's MORE than Beamon-esque: it occurred in an era well after widespread doping occurred, when there was big money to be made, and the international field was very deep--unlike Beamon's day, when there was arguably less doping, no money in LJ, and a much more amateurish approach to T&F.
Beamon's jump stood out because it was great. But it stood out AS MUCH AS IT DID because the field of the day was probably not great. It took 25 years for the field to catch up in the form of Lewis, Powell, Saladino, Pedroso, etc.
The current and historic 100m field, on the other hand, is VERY deep, and includes guys proven to have been doping--WHOSE PERFORMANCES ARE NOWHERE NEAR 9.58
The only guy who has ever been within striking distance has been Gay--and that includes the past 25 years of dedicated professional athletes from a truly international field, who have received the benefit of nutrition, scientific training, the American college system, sponsorship, the lure of prize money, the honing benefits of stiff competition, etc..
9.58 is more than Beamon-esque. It makes other legendary sprinters, doped or not, look like chumps, I don't care who you name--Greene, Bailey, Fredricks, Surin, Marsh, Zakari, Montgomery, Smith, Gatlin, Obikwelu, Johnson, Carter, Powell, Lewis, Mitchell, Burrell, Chambers, Boldon, etc..
These were guys who trained HARD, who dedicated every moment of their life to the 100m, who were the best they could possibly be, who may or may not have even used PED's, who appeared from an international field of selection, and many of whom had the benefit of either the American college system or state and corporate sponsorship.
I don't think that distance people on this board understand exactly where 9.58 lies.
It is laughable, as was 9.79 -- but 9.79 was within sight, if one used 'roids long enough, and guys did.
What to do about 9.58? Will 'roids get you there? They didn't get Chambers, Mullings, Johnson, Gatlin, Montgomery, etc. there--the closest they ever got them was 0.2 away, which is infinite in sprinting terms.
Powell is nothing to worry about. All the guys running 9.9x and 9.8x today are currently nothing to worry about, either.
The only guy ever within sight was Gay, and what's he to do? Assuming he's clean, given his health problems, if he did some 'roids, he'd probably just end up massively injuring some connective tissue or something in his back/ham, more than he already has.
You will never see anybody run faster than 9.58, unless Bolt himself runs with a +10.0 wind and gets lucky. Even Carl Lewis and Obadele Thompson didn't come close to 9.58 when they had a huge wind and got lucky.
9.58 -- nine-point-FIVE-eight. Not nine-point-SIX-eight.
Out of reach. At least we have video!
Of course, I hope I'm wrong.
J-Mee just went 10.1 last week. This obviously was a bad race for him.

That was a pretty sweet post.
When it comes to PEDs, we haven't see the peak, we've just seen the beginning. I don't think we've seen the limit of human performance over 100m yet, either.
Bolt's notable change in physique is quite remarkable. This doesn't happen by accident, so I am guessing they figured he could run even faster with more muscles. Too early to say whether it will pay off.
I was actually quite impressed by Lemaitre, who seemed to be able to match Bolt's acceleration. I think he showed why the decision to focus on the 200m was the right one.
Sprint Geezer is simple DUMB!
Bolt can beat his old record if he stays injury free. Everyone seems to forget how young he is. The major problem will be putting in the training required to get back to 9.58 without getting injured again. He has already taken significant time of twice due to injury so this is a major obstacle.
