I blew it today with the coffee barista lady at Starbucks. I ordered coffee, she smiled, and I wanted to get her number but I couldnt work up the balls to go through with it. How do you work up the courage to do it? and how can you do it while saving face

Chances are she's wearing a name tag so you will probably have to find a cleverer way to get on a first name basis with her.

If you are going to chat her up, do it during a quiet period. For one thing, with a line of people behind you, she might be too busy to chat.
Second, other than her looks, what makes her interesting to you? It can be pretty bad to ask a smokin' hot chick out and then find she is an idiot, has nothing in common with you, hates stuff you like, etc.
Also, for a first date, do something that you can end quickly if it starts to spiral downward. Drinks or coffee are good. If it goes well you can maybe transition right into dinner. If not, you say you made other plans and then bail.
In your case, you then need to find a new coffee shop. Is it worth it?

PS: You did not blow it; you just passed on the opportunity. If she had been flirting with you, coming on to you, etc and you did nothing, that would be blowing it.
Now, if she meets a guy before you can ask her out and starts dating him seriously, then you might have blown it. This happened to me in HS. I went out with a girl, we both had a great time. I was sick a few days the next week so did not see her at school then I was out of town and she went out with another guy. That was it. Of course they ended up getting married (and are still married).
same thing happened to Theo Huxtable when his dad (cliff) grounded him for having bad grades which prevented him from going out with this one chick who met and was eventually married durting Theo's period of groundation. we find out years later that Theo had dislexia and the grounds for the punishment were unfounded (at least with hindsight).
We cannot help this guy based on the information presented in this thread.
