The sad news this morning had me wondering... would I willingly trade what Sammy had for what I still have? In other words, would I accept a tragic death in dishonorable circumstances before age 25, that I might go down in history as one of the greatest distance runners the world has ever known?

Not a chance. It doesn't sound like he was able to have a chipper life, there, records and medals aside. I'd rather have a good happy life than being known as the greatest marathoner to have ever lived.

Well let's see, it was never proven that he beat his wife. And he suffered an accident which is why he won't be around for his kids. He won an Olympic marathon title and was one of the greatest marathoners ever.

Not true. At all.
I am no Olympian, but I did qualify for (and compete in) the Olympic Trials. I was All America and remained competitive for a decent amount of time post college. I still run decent times and take running seriously. No race or event would even come close to the importance of my family. Ever.

To be honest, I agree with you now and I wish I could take back my original post. I think it came across as very judgemental, and God knows I've had my share of moral failures. For that I apologize and pay my respect to a man who clearly was a phenomenally gifted runner and an ispiration to many.
