what are some of the other contenders?
GF at CA state meet
Henry Rono - 5K/Steeple at the '78 NCAA's.
Xavier carter at NCAA
For the time Pre's 3:56/13:06 1 and 3 double.
Jesse Owens set 4 world record in 45 minutes.
Actually 6 since the two 220 yard races also broke the respective 200m records.

Pietro Mennea, Mexico City, 4/9/1979:
200m 19.72 (WR, stood for 17 years)
100m 10.01
Without a doubt, the 100m would have been the first sub-10 by a caucasian if it hadn't been for the WORLD RECORD that preceeded it.
Coe's as best double ever?
No way. LV's mile, 2 mile, 5000 was a way better double.
At the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, Paavo Nurmi had a pretty good afternoon winning the 1500m and 5000m which were held with only an hour between them.
I think that Peter Snell broke the 800m world record twice in one day in the prelims, 1960 Olympics in Rome. Can anybody verify this?

No one can, because it never happened.

This is better:
9.84 at 8:05pm
9.69 WR at 10:30pm.
coe was doped on steriods, caffeine, etc. he blood doped too. it was legal then. every record set and medal awarded before 2000 is considered invalid today by sports authorities. there was no testing in those days. everyone was a legal dope fiend.
Jesse Owens Big-10 meet 1935: three world records and tied a fourth.

sounds like a triple to me... derp
Really? You figured that out all by yourself, Sherlock?
Maurice Mitchell at his high school state championships in 2008. He won the 400m in a good time for a high schooler in 47.62 then 15 minutes later anchored his high school 4 x 100m relay to a state title. Raytown South High School ran 41.47. He go the baton 10-12 meters down and BLAZED A 9.3 SPLIT. GO ON YOUT TUBE AND WATCH IT. NOT BAD FOR A HIGH SCHOOLER. HE\'S DOING OK NOW AT Florida State(10.03,20.19)

Oh, you have evidence do you!?
There WAS testing in those days, during competition and if you set a WR. Coe and other "international" Brits were also being tested regularly out of competition and randomly, from 1981. That's how David Jenkins and several others were caught. By 1985 they were also randomly tested out of season as well, long before the IAAF introduced their own random testing in 1989. By the time he retired in 1990 Coe has stated that he'd been tested over 200 times; probably one of the most tested athletes during the 80's.
Some nations still don't randomly test their athletes.
Toro and uhuh are right, it is Jesse Ovens at the 1935 Big 10 meet. 4 WRs in 45 minutes in 4 different events. If you were to just restrict the discussion to just the best double ever and not just the best quadruple ever, Jesse Owens would have I think at least 12 different combinations you could pick to be the greatest double of all time. No matter which events you picked that Jesse won that day, they would still be world records and within 45 minutes or each other. I think Jesse easily wins.
I apologize for misspelling Jesse Owens' name in the first sentence. It is early in the morning.
An unfortunate typo given the Hitler connections.
I have heard, but am not sure, that Anthuan Maybank went 27'1" in the LJ and 44.99 in the same day. While not at Owens' level, it's pretty damned amazing, if true.
