my son is 14 and just started running track. he runs the 800 and the 1600. he has competed this year in weekly league meets and i've been surprised to see that nobody gives splits to any of the athletes running races longer than one lap. even worse, they aren't being recorded so even after the race he has no idea whether he went out fast or slow. and nobody has given my son any advice regarding how fast to go out and how could they, when nobody is even paying attention to splits. all he gets is a finishing time. this in spite of the fact that there are plenty of race officials standing around the finish line. so this week i went to the starting line and read off splits to my son as he went by. which he found very helpful. after the race an official came up to me and told me i can't read splits out loud, it's against the rules and my son could be disqualified. it's considered "pacing" he said since it isn't available to all the runners. this was after a 2-mile relay where, by the last leg, you couldn't have found any two runners on the track within 50 meters of each other. i said well why don't you guys just read the watch out loud as everyone goes by? he said he agrees with me that they should do that and they used to do it but at some point in the past they changed the rule or something and now they don't.
i've never heard anything more moronic in my life. has anyone else ever encountered anything like this?
