Are you wearing socks? And what makes you think that frees are "minimal"(can we stop using that word yet)?
If you think your Free's smell bad you shoulda' took a wiff of the old 1990's era Air Flow's. NIKE exchanged a couple pair for me they were so bad.
They were mistaken for compression socks by your neighbor.
A nasty fungus which has gotten into the man-made materials they are manufactured from in Southeast Asia. No known cure. Unfortunately, this is all true. Ditch them before it spreads.

I was thinking the exact same thing. A cat can ruin a good pair of running shoes faster than anything.
A washing machine will help to get rid of the smell.
Then you can do the same thing with your shoes.

Put the shoes inside a plastic bag, tie the bag off or seal it somehow, place in your freezer when you aren't using them.

How long do you leave them out to thaw before you wear them, or do you just pop them in the microwave to defrost?
Now that's an interesting idea....microwave them to kill any bacteria/fungus....maybe?
Maybe some Geox shoes. Check em out
put them in the washing machine, add soap, start wash cycle. once the cycle is completed take them out and let them dry in the sun for a day or two.
