I thought about this but chickened out and went with the Hyperspeeds, which are fine but . . . it's tempting to se whether losing a few ounces would help. Piranhas are OK for 20 milers at least but I wonder about all that downhill pounding at race pace.

I wasn't worried about anything specific, it's just that the common wisdom seems to be some shoes are "not enough" or have too little cushioning for a marathon and I didn't want to run into whatever problems arise from that. Since the Hyperspeeds always worked for me I did the safe thing and went with them but if it's true that you can get 1 sec/mile/oz then it might be worth losing 3-4 oz.

Go with the shoes that are comfortable, not the lightest. Think about losing a few ounces from your body if you're that concerned about weight.
I did - ran a 2:49, which was a 7-minute PR for me. I'm pretty used to running in shoes that are that minimal, but I wound up with cramped calves at the end. It went away in a few days, though, so it was worth it.

If you're legs are accustomed to what you're wearing (and you've done the proper training) you should be fine. There are guys that run the whole thing barefoot or in Vibrams and they make it out.
