Well since you were a young high schooler and don't really seem ahead of the curve in running intelligence I'm going to guess you went out in about 4:45
Had a near miss at 16:00. km splits were 3:10, 10, 15, 20 and 05. I suffered through the middle and came back sorta strong. Didn't get a mile split, but since I was running pretty even, it would have been about 5:04 at 1600 m.
Dipped under 16 once, with 15:54. Didn't get a mile split, but 1600m split was about 5:07.5, based on the 200 & 400 splits. Closed with 75.7 and 68.9.
I tend to start fairly conservative, aim for an even pace and finish faster. The 16:00 would have started too fast, hence the suffering through the middle. :-)
First time was a 4:55 then 15:57. Extremely painful.
Pretty much everyt ime after that I was under 15:30 with a 5:00-5:05. When I ran in the 15:0x's and 15:1x's it was more like 4:48ish-55. (Only cross and roads)
So I'd just say go even.
15:43, first mile was 4:45.
To be fair, that was at the SAS XC course in Cary, site of Great American, which has a screaming fast downhill/flat first mile.
First time I got under 16 was a 15:54 on the track, back in 2008, and I wasn't taking splits, so all I have in my log book is "under 5 for the first mile." Then, a couple weeks later I ran 15:43 on the road at the Carlsbad 5k with a first mile of 4:54, which I paid for with a 5:15 third mile. Amazingly though (to me) as I continue to improve at every other distance I've just gotten slower and slower at 5ks and these still stand as my second and third best times.
My first sub 16 was a 15:56 and I opened in 4:48. Stupid I know but I had no idea what I was doing.
My next 5k I went out in 4:57 and ran 15:28
My two most recent 5ks:
15:47 first mile 5:00
15:36 first mile 4:57
my first sub 16 3-mile went like this:
4:50
5:40
4:58
15:28
People today generally don't get this ailment but a sub-16 5ker would have real problems with the lethargy it causes.
Just drink up the vitamin C and your scurvey should go away
I dont recall my first time, but after my first year in college I came home and ran a 1556 in a local road race running 512 512 454 35.
Once ran 15:45, 1st. mile was 4:50, 9:50 for 2 miles, tough last mile plus! Very competitive field, lapped by leaders, winning time was low 14's
13:36, 4:19
