I've only been running for about 1.5 years, but I'm reaching the point where I might have a shot at winning some of the smaller local 5k races in the area. I realize that winning a 5k in 18:xx is hobbyjogger territory for a lot of you, and might be even embarrassing, but I'm in my mid-30s, very new to running and it's still pretty exciting.
So anyway, I'm curious if there are any tips or advice for what I can be doing to win a race, especially when matched up against someone of similar ability. Yeah, "run faster than they do" is already a goal. Should I hang back and try to out-kick them at the end? If so, how far from the finish line is the best time to kick? Or should take the lead and try to wear them down? How critical is "mental toughness" in these situations and what kinds of things can you do to get better at it?
Maybe a lot of it comes down to individual strengths and weaknesses, or race-day variables, but if there are any general tips/advice you're willing to share I'd greatly appreciate it.
