A friend and I are moving into a house May 1st. The house has a fenced in back yard so we are considering getting a dog. It would have to be a full time outdoor dog, however during incliment weather there is a shed it could go in. Any suggestions on what type of dog to get? We want one that is fat and lazy and awesome!
You want an outdoor dog that is fat and lazy? You're a f***ing dickhead. Get an outdoor dog that is active, healthy, and gets a ton of exercise. Making a dog fat is equivalent to child abuse.
So you basically want a dog that you don't have to take care of?
Yeah, doesn't sound like you actually want a dog. But if you must, something with short legs would be best for what you're describing. Don't get anything that looks like it wants to run if you're just going to keep it in your backyard all day boxed up.
wolf. they love the outdoors, and can offer additional protection for the backyard. a very independent breed.
Get one that likes to roll around in other dogs' shit and then lounge around on your furniture, beds, carpets, etc. Oh, wait, that describes pretty much all dogs. Have fun with that.
Go to the Humane Society and get an older dog. Doesn't sound like you want a puppy anyway. You can get a good dog that might have been abandoned or their owner passed away.

Usually I'd recommend getting a dog from the humane society, but you obviously aren't equipped to be a pet owner. No dog deserves the living environment you describe. If you aren't prepared to bring the dog indoors at night and during all forms of bad weather, then don't bother getting a dog.
People like you make me sick. Pets would be better off being put down than to live with the likes of you.
Don't get a dog. No dog should be left outside all day. Dogs are social animals. The need to be with people or with other dogs. If you leave the dog outside all the time and only see it a few moments every day, the dog will get anxious, bark all the time and may become aggressive with vistors. It is just a crappy life for a dog to live outside and alone almost all the time. Don't do it. Dogs aren't shrubbery.
Ha ok wow not the response I was expecting. I just don't want a dog that is going to jump on me every 5 seconds. I want one that is content with laying around. Of course I will take it on walks. I suppose I should not have said fat...i just want one that is content with being lazy.
Greyhounds are incredibly lazy. In fact, any active dogs will be lazy if you get it some exercise. If not, they resort to digging up the couch and the backyard or walking on the dining room table (I've seen it happen). Don't let a dog get fat. A healthy dog that gets regular exercise will lay around the house or backyard all day long. I have 2 cowdogs, and when they are at home they lay on the couch or out in the sun. Then we go for a nice run after work.

If you leave it outside all the time its going to become neurotic and jump on you all the time because it is attention starved. If you don't want it to jump on you all the time then give it attention and train it.
I have two border collies and neither of them would ever dare jump up on someone without permission. Any dog can be trained not to do that but it takes a big commitment. Once a dog learns that a particular behavior is acceptable it becomes more difficult to teach it that it is unacceptable so you need to start early and be consistent.
If you don't already know this I still recommend not getting a dog. It doesn't sound like you're willing to put in that kind of time.
Ok that sounds perfect. The dog will definitely recieve excersice but I want it to be like me and be lazy unless excersising. I also like big dogs so I think greyhound is the way to go. Thanks for the input...even tho people now hate me lol.
You cannot leave a greyhound out in the yard all the time while you are away. They will jump just about any fence you can possibly imagine.
Well i know that everyone is in disagreeance with this but it would have to be an outside dog. How active are laboradors? My parents have a lab and it has always been an outside dog and they take it on walks and it is pefectly happy, however it is quite active. Are all labs like this?
Labradors are very, very social animals. They need attention.
They are also quite active, particularly as youngsters. If you leave one alone in your yard it will dig and chew just about everything.
I do agree w/ whoever upthread said that if you are going to get a dog you should consider an older rescue dog. I think a herding dog sounds more in line with what you are looking for.

I just googled "whippet" and some of them look like they are on steroids! But the smaller one's look nice.
