NCAA 2004 XC how did wisconsin lose?

Bookies got to Teg and Solinsky - so the Wisco lads took a dive and threw the race.

Was this the year of the ridiculous mud? I think the strength of the Buffs outlasted the speed of the Badgers.

Schumacher got tooled in the strategy department with the conditions. It's that simple. Plus, that was the only bad college race (XC or track) that Nelson ever had, but they should have been able to overcome that.

The Badgers went out too hard and all of them except Bairu fell apart. Poor coaching.

Wisconsin was more of an 8000m team and the course ran closer to 11000m; they lost by a second and if it had ended a minute earlier would probably have won. They left the 2nd place trophy there but someone picked it up and returned it to them. They got revenge the next year by killing the field. Also, Teg was in the middle of injury issues that significantly curtailed his training and # five was a bit back and faded.

Teg was not injured during cross in 2004. He was injured in the 2003 cross season and didn't even run the postseason meets, then missed some time during track in 04 but came back and finished 3rd in the 5K behind Cheseret and Ritzenhein. He was healthy in the fall of 04, just had a bad nationals race.

Well the women had a bunch of good 5000 times at MtSAC and that does not include their 15:25 gal) and they get last year's star freshman back from injury they could be pretty good.

Heyyyy Josh Spiker. I always wondered how he did in college. Is this the same Josh Spiker that ran 4:0X in high school on like 15 miles per week? How'd he do in the college track scene?

Spiker may have been the key - Wisco easily wins if he does anything close to his capability (he took something like 11th or 12th in his 2nd year of college at Furman.

Wisconsin went out too fast in a very muddy slow course and blow the f up. Colorado started conservative and came on super strong at the end. Quite possibly one of the biggest xc upsets ever.

But look at the ex badgers now... Bairu, Tegenkamp, Solinsky, Nelson running super fast, Lockhart is a assistant with the Oklahoma St, Spiker owns a successful running store, Keller not sure.
