That's how you get the times. Run like he did. Put it on the line. Kid was dying hard in the end but held off Torres. Nice job.

One of the announcers was calling him Scotty Braun...yeah, sure Bauhs was around, but still, RIDICULOUS. Those hs times were altitude...but still, like you said, there are a lot of kids out there that ran those kinds of times, not hundreds, but certainly a lot who will never touch the levels that braun has seen. Braun put in as much as work at Adams as anyone did anywhere.

Adams State looks like a great place for development, i love the video series. They take things serious, leave no stones unturned.

He's going to debut in the 10k at Peyton Jordan. I'd put his fitness at around 13:19 or so in a rabbited race (the first two laps tonight were slow 67) ... maybe he'll be able to run sub 27:40?

I'm not going to be surprised if he sneaks onto a World's team... especially if the pace lags at nationals.

Yes, a great story but a bit deceptive. He lived at altitude and raced at altitude in high school. I cannot say for sure where his pr's were ran but figure they were at 5,000 feet or higher.

I'm a huge fan of Braun as a Colorado guy myself, but those high school times are like 9:15 and 4:17 at sea level. Still damn modest for a 13:27 guy.

I heard he had a mustache in high school too. The kid is becoming a beast!

And he looks like a racewalker when he runs...good for him all around. He ripped everybodys balls off in that race.

This used to be the best kept secret and coaches could capitalize on recruiting the mediocre "9:30" guy out of Colorado who only ran 40-50 miles per week or less in high school. The cat's out of the bag now. Put that same guy at sea level, where he cannot only race faster but TRAIN faster and maybe with more volume in better weather, and you've got a 9:00 two-miler on your hands.

The whole "Pat Porter" only ran 4:29/9:51 in high school but became world class is a joke, because I'll bet he didn't train much in high school and ran those times at 6000' elevation. The state record in CO until 1986 was 9:31.8 (guys had run 9:25, but not at the state meet).

Good for Braun.

I don't think the "cat's out of the bag" just yet. Most 9:35/4:24 guys at altitude aren't recruited much by D1 coaches. Even in Braun's case, CSU showed very little interest.

Part of the issue there is that, with the availability of the Internet, high school kids are all now running 80+ mpw, so the bar in CO has been lowered into the 9:15 range. But the 9:30 guys off 40-50 miles per week or less are still "gems." That's where I'd look. I've seen other coaches make similar remarks on here.

This is a little regional perspective, but while Fort Collins HS regularly wins state titles and makes it to Nationals, Rocky Mountain HS is kind of the untrained, red-headed stepchild of the area. You get some good talent that comes out of there, but it's all pretty raw with LOTS of room for improvement post-HS. Western State had a similar experience: picked up a girl who was a 19-something 5K runner consistently; next year at Western she runs in the 17s.

Just because you're at altitude (which in Rocky's case is good for about 13 seconds in a 3200m) doesn't mean you won't get noticed. Braun just didn't look stellar before college.
