I'd take this to mean the opposite... If you're a desperate, unemployed dancer, you strip. If you're a desperate, unemloyed accountant, you do bookkeeping. If you're a desperate, unemployed track athlete, you show up at shoe stores for a couple hundred bucks. Don't forget the 'washed up' argument. His glory days gone, Webb is reduced to recounting high school and the year 2007.
He was in town to promote the Grand Blue Mile, a street mile race in conjunction with the Drake Relays. After talking to him while he was here, don't count him out.
No offense, but you are very wrong about that. I have seen Leo Manzano, Meb K, and Shannon R (just to name a few), that have showed up to support events or give short talks/book signings.
All of those folks are at the top of the sport in the U.S.
Leo, Meb, and Shannon still have contracts with shoe companies. Webb doesn't. Of course, it's not unusual for an elite, professional athlete. However, Webb is not an elite athlete and is drifting out of professional status. He can't place high enough to win prize money and he doesn't have a sponsorship. All he has are appearrance fees, and without the latter 2, this is in jeopardy.
So what's the difference between Leo, Meb, Rowbury, and Webb? Webb needs to be at those shoe stores.
