MLB players vs World class cricketers

and yet there are far more cricketers than there are baseball players. the fielding positions are practically the same so I don't know how you could argue that one could be better than the other.

It won't be long before cricketers are making more money than any sports players on the planet. India's population just reached 1.2billion. outside of the USA and Japan, there is very little money in baseball.

Again, an entirely subjective opinion. I am more an more convinced that there is no such thing as "athleticis" as an abstraction. Athletic ability is in relation to particular tasks, so it is entirely possible for cricketeers to be better athletes and more skilled in cricket and baseball players be better baseball athletes and players. This is especially true because of point 3, that most players do not try both and therefore do not have equal ability to master both skillsets.

Pretty clear to me that athletes self-select based on cultural issues. There is almost no overlap between countries who seriously play baseball and those who seriously play cricket.

Companies who produce these products might not have as great of an incentive to pay ridiculous amounts for endorsement contracts like they due in the US because The people they're marketing to have no ability to purchase the companies' products in the first place...

This misses the entire point though. There are not millions of Indian, Pakistani, and Sri Lankan kids playing baseball and cricket that then select into cricket. They are only playing cricket at a young age. Why? Because it is what their country has infrastructure in and what they have encouragement and support to play. So they develop cricket skills, likely prior to becoming aware that there is even this thing called baseball out there, much less knowing how much money those guys make vs. cricket stars.

By the time they might be aware of all of the opportunities they would likely be teenagers and have to move halfway across the world into a strange culture in order to have opportunity to develop baseball skills. Only the very best of the very best would probably have any sponsored way to do this, if any could, with a very uncertain return on investment while foregoing a much more likely return on their playing and monetary investment by sticking with cricket.

There is less money overall in cricket but there is still good money for the stars in salary and (more importantly) endorsement money. Cricket players at any level are not leaving in huge waves for baseball because there are significant opportunity costs for a very uncertain return.

Just assume both sports require similar eye hand coordination and break athleticism down into measurable components-- who's bigger, faster, stronger.

There's no comparison-- baseball players are better athletes.

Just like NBA players are better athletes than baseball players. Surely we could reach a consensus about that. Wait, what about Michael Jordan you say? Compared to John Kruk playing in the NBA he was a pretty good baseball player.

I'm sure there are many MLB players who could play cricket at the highest levels, and very few who could make the Majors.

As someone who loves baseball and really doesnt give a crap about cricket, it is infinitely harder to play in the cricket world cup than MLB.

MLB drafts 1,000 people every year. Granted there are only ~100 rookies that get any playing time each year. There are billions of people who grow up playing Cricket. Ive lived in India and it is bigger than soccer Europe. That is the only sport these people care about.

That being said, I do recognize that there is probably much less skill development in most of these countries relative to the US skill-developing machine that is high school, college, travel and minor league sports.

I def. think cricketers would have a much more difficult time transitioning to baseball, but it is harder to make it to the cricket world cup.

Cricket takes more skill by far. In baseball you just swing the bat, in cricket there is a whole batting technique to it that takes a lot more technique and skill. Cricket is also the 2nd or 3rd most played sport in the world (but only North Americans and the Japanese play baseball). There have actually been some cricket players like Adam Gilchrist who have been recruited by the MLB.

A lot of Americans don't know the rules of cricket, how it works etc. and don't understand but I can give a better perspective knowing both the rules of baseball and cricket (and follow both to an extent).

Batting in cricket is hugely different from batting in baseball.

The level of discipline required is just so much greater in cricket. I'm not sure that's something that could be learned if they hadn't started early. In a test match, you miss a straight one and you might be sat waiting to have another chance to bat for 3 days. (in the same game)

That said, the level of hand-eye co-ordination and bat speed to be a successful baseball player would rule out all but a few cricketers from playing successful baseball, at least for batsmen.

I'm sure the likes of Brett Lee and Shoaib Akhtar could have been decent pitchers though, I'm pretty certain Lee was looked at by a number of teams when he was bowling at close to 100mph back in the day.

And what's the deal with those pussy gloves? Cricket balls are harder than baseballs and catches are way more spectacular.

There's also at least 4 hits per 6 balls in cricket.
