Places to stay: Sorry you're on your own for that one. Best suggestion: Look at a map of Boston, pick one of the surrounding towns that's on the commuter rail or subway and try to book something there.
To get to the start: You go downtown and get on the BAA buses pretty early in the morning. I think they start going out around 6:00 A.M. or so. The higher your number, the sooner you're supposed to get on a bus.
Gear check works like this: When you pick up your race packet at the expo, they give you a special bag on which you put a sticker that has your bib number. Come race day, as you are walking to the start, you walk past a long row of buses. In each bus window is a range of bib numbers (like 50-100 numbers per window, I think). You find the range that matches your bib number and hand your bag over to the person inside.
When you finish the race, you walk down one block and turn left and there are all the buses. Go find the range that matches your bib number and pick up your bag. Easy as cake.
