The wifey took a tire-iron to his knee, Tony Harding Style!!
Seriously. He's probably scared of losing to Makau.
By 'knee-injury' I guess he means 'serious legal trouble.'
Given what's been going on, this is hardly a surprise
Wanjiru is an injury away from oblivion.
This is a good reason to not be arrogant, and to take much better care of himself than he has.
Wanjiru kind of reminds of mainstream sports stars like Randy Moss. Huge talent, hangs with a questionable crowd, and might be a little crazy. You never know what he'll show up and do each day. But fun as hell to watch run a marathon.
My favorite contemporary runner! This news is a darn shame.
It is my opinion - and I doubt I'm alone here - that Sammy Wanjiru might be one of the greatest runners, if not the greatest runner, of all time. Had he not encountered the problems he did on the track with his feet, I think we might have seen Bekele's dominance seriously challenged. His 26:41 still blows my mind, not to mention his stunning run at Beijing, as well as that short-lived half-marathon world record...
It's a shame Sammy can't get it together outside of running. He may have missed what could have been some of his greatest performances because of it. Only time will tell what kind of legacy Mr. Wanjiru will establish... a great talent only partially explored, or one of the all time best. I'm certainly pulling for the latter...
yeah but in 30 years we will remember him for beating his wife and being a drunk. he may be the most talented runner ever, too bad he is a lunatic.
What do you mean "problems with his feet?" I've always been awed by his 26:4x world jr. record, and wondered why he didn't take to the track more seriously..
the story link at the top of the home page has picture of Sammy Wanjiru that doesn't even resemble him. Might be Abel Kirui.

Wanjiru has never shown fear when it comes to running, give me a break.

I don't know, he was pretty rough in Chicago. I think he maybe went to the well a little too deeply there after several other marathons where he had already dug pretty deep. You can't keep redlining like that forever.
He's known to like a drink, pretty much proven he's completely crazy and is a superb and entertaining marathon runner. The guy is a massive blow to any field.
I wanted to see him and Lel (the 2 best marathoners in history in my opinion) go head to head one more time when fully fit. It won;t happen now unfortunately.
