Hi Mr. Conova,
This document(http://run-down.com/guests/mv_el_guerrouj.php[\link]) purportedly describes El Guerrouj's training for his 1997 season. I have a question regarding this specific training, and 2 other general questions regarding middle distance running.
1) I notice that El Guerrouj does not have any long runs: most of his training during his "base phase" is at a maximum of 60 min. and mainly between 35 to 45 min. Of course, this is done at a high level ("He is demanded that he runs at his maximum at that moment"), which I'm guessing is at a high percentage of VO2 max (but definitely below 100%) So is this the most effective way to develop the necessary fitness for 1500/mile runners, ie running at a relatively high percentage of VO2 max for training runs?
2) My second question is how does one develop both aerobic capacity AND the ability to sprint? In other words, how do you simultaneously train a runner to be able to throw down a 13:30 5k and a 45.5 sec 400m?
3) Doesn't a program with high volume necessarily reduce one's sprinting (ie 400m running) ability?
