This guy led teh NYC half as late as..8 miles? Finished 10th in a sub-62 minute time. Never heard of the guy. The announcers had never heard of the guy.
A dreadlocks wearing muscular Ethiopian. Cool.

He is almost certainly the slowest 10000m runner (29:47:02) to run sub 1:02 in the half. He trains in Flagstaff.
Sub-62 is really fast for him. I remember his name coming up around the Baltimore/DC area a few years ago, especially when he won the National Marathon Half Marathon in 66 something in 2008. I hadn't heard any more recent results and it sounded like he fell off the radar. I think his PRs as of 2008 were 66 for 13.1 and just barely sub 30 for 10k, but I can't find any race results in 3 years, so maybe he took a long time to build up his base or just went back to Africa for awhile or something. Oh, he was also a National Junior Steeple Champion, so while a 66 to 62 PR would seem suspicious, he seems like a very naturally fast guy.

That 29:47 isn't recent though, right?
63 many years ago (2007-08?) in Delhi HM, 63 in 3M Austin in 2009, 63 in Naples in 2011. Also, Ethiopian steeplechase champion, and ~8:40 3k ST runner, from 7yr ago, including an 8:43 in Addis. So 62 is not surprising at all. http://www.iaaf.org/athletes/biographies/country=eth/athcode=201952/index.html
I believe that's the boyfriend of Belainesh Gebre, the guy who pacemakes her in a lot of races and handed her bottles in Honolulu.
I was down in California visiting family last October and I showed up to a race in Riverside that had a little bit of prize money. On the start line of the 5k no one stood out to me as fast-looking. I went out in first at my 16-minute pace and figured I wouldn't have a hard time winning. About 200m in, this kid passed me. Dreadlocks, looked like he was in high school, complete with a worn-out jersey. I figured he was going out way too fast and would fade after a 5:00 first mile. Instead he kept putting distance on me and won easily.
There was a 10k 45 minutes later which we both ran, and he won that too (although the prize money for that was double so he actually had to sprint at the end in order to dispense the competition). I think his 10k time ended up being less than twice his 5k time. I talked to him briefly after the race and he said he was up from Flagstaff and was using the races as a workout.
At the awards ceremony they (like the NYC Half announcers) pronounced his name "Ezekias", which I figured sounded East-African enough for me not to feel too bad about losing to him.
At first glance of him in the race, I thought he was a runner from Washington State.
This guy ran 8:40 at age 15??
This guy is legit, he even came to win a half in canada in 64 in think, we had his picture on the running room magazine. I don't know if you guys remember the controversy about his wife Belainesh being paced by a male...that was him (Sisay) in Honolulu marathon

for a steeplechase, that is pretty legit.
8:43 ST in Addis = 8:20 ST at sea level, no?

THAT's why this guy rings such a bell in my mind! I remember this. I remember all the talk about this must be a fuel belt marathon WR. hahahaha
Sisay also run a very nice 1:01:16 20 k in The dam to dam race. He ran it driving rain... So I knew he would do well... Its good to see the young kids mix it up with the super pro's. Guysbyou've run against locally getting into big races. He has to be stoked
He was also wearing a WSX or west side runners singlet, I think that's the same club in NY that Alene Retta represents. Are these guys based in NYC and just training in Flagstaff for a few months?
He just got busted for EPO and was handed a 2-year ban by USADA.
Buh-bye!
